Solar Energy

Solar energy is a resource that is not only sustainable for energy consumption, it is indefinitely renewable (at least until the sun runs out in billions of years). Solar power can be used to generate electricity and various other applications.

• Solar Energy originates with the thermonuclear fusion reactions occurring in the sun.

• It represents the entire electromagnetic radiation (visible light, infrared, ultraviolet, x-rays, and radio waves).

• The Earth’s surface receives about 47% of the total solar energy that reaches the Earth. This energy is an ultimate resource for Renewable energy

Advantages

• All chemical and radioactive polluting byproducts of the thermonuclear reactions remain behind on the sun, while only pure radiant energy reaches the Earth.

• Energy reaching the earth is incredible. By one calculation, 30 days of sunshine striking the Earth have the energy equivalent of the total of all the planet’s fossil fuels, both used and unused!

Disadvantages

• Solar power disadvantages are actually not many, except limitations on energy produced in regions where the sunshine time is limited. Solar energy can only be harnessed when it is daytime and sunny.

• Solar power stations have a lower power output comparatively to similar sized conventional power stations.
